The Old Church House Inn, Torbryan, Devon
This is the first "Pub of the Week" outside London - which proves that I do venture outside the metropolis occasionally.
This week I joined my relatives down in Devon for my aunt's 80th birthday. The party was held in the pub in the small village of Torbryan. I had a great time and some great beer (actually, quite a lot of great beer) so the featured pub this week is The Old Church House Inn, Torbryan, Devon.
As you can see from the picture, the Church House Inn is in the middle of nowhere - at least that's how it seems to someone like me who is used to London. The village is tiny - only 25 houses, the Church and the pub, so you are guaranteed peace and quiet. The pub was built in around 1400 and it has low ceilings, oak beams and roaring log fires. It has lots of small rooms, so although it is a sizable pub, it doesn't feel noisy or crowded.
The food and beer are excellent. Last week they had Skinner's Betty Stogs Bitter from Cornwall and Palmer's Gold from Dorset. The beers were well kept -I sampled them both several times, just to make sure. The staff are friendly and helpful and happy to have a chat and a beer with you when the pub is quieter.
Until this weekend, it was eight years since I had been to the Church House Inn. I won't be leaving it so long before the next visit.
