Is offending the religious symbols of others a freedom of speech? Pardon me. In the past I believed this was ugly racism!! Thanks for your CORRECTION!!!!!!!

"Is offending the religious symbols of others a freedom of speech?"

Yes - reference the (offensive to Christians) 'Piss Christ', a work of art. Not to my taste, but within the rights of the 'artist' to express themselves in a free society.

"In the past I believed this was ugly racism"

Pray tell me (excuse the pun) but to what 'race' do Muslims belong..? It was my understanding that it was a religion, not a race.

Also, be carefull you don't wear out your '!' key there......

Sorry a Misunderstanding Muslim, but in what way will adding "... new pictures [that] are more inflammatory than any of the original cartoons." be helpful in this context?

Repeat after me:
1. Free speech is meaningless unless it includes the freedom to say things that others do not like.
2. You don't like what I say: reason with me: show me and everyone else WHY I am bigotted or wrong. Issuing death threats usually proves to everyone else that you have no argument....

This is the defining moment of the defence of free speech: you have forgotten why these cartoons were published in the first instance:
1. An author could not get anyone to illustrate a book he was writing on the topic of Mohammed.
2. He became concerned that free speech was being heavily eroded by self-censorship (hold this thought)
3. JP takes up the challenge and asks for submissions
4. It prints 12 - NOT 15.
5. Muslim world goes nuts, thereby proving point 2 above.

Free speech is one on the key bulwarks against totalitarianism. There can be no compromise in its defence.

Ask yourself how much real damage these cartoons do to you personally. Ask yourself if your faith is strong enough to withstand even the slightest scrutiny. If not, why should anyone take you seriously?

first poster: Yes, you do misunderstand - fatally. Frankly, if Muslims can get so het up about such a small concern, which is clearly being stage-managed to stir the bottomless pit that is the Islamic grievance industry, then their belief must be revealed as entirely skin-deep. You protest too much, in all senses of the phrase.

Free speech backed by the fundamental belief of a few billion Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists that mohammed is not a prophet and not a direct conduit from God. It seems an expression of religious freedom to acknowledge a lie via satire.

You know, I have to say, even though the topic of those cartoons has been plastered all over the media here in Australia, none of us actually have seen those cartoons! Or at least known I know have seen it and been able to tell me what exactly are they.

As a Muslim I do not like people to insult my religion, naturally that would be more or less the same for anyone else from any religion so no surprise there really.

The question here seems to be based on the articles that I have read so far is a free speech subject, you want free speech you need it you love it, which is great, I do to, thus if a cartoon for example depicts that the prophet of Islam is not actually a prophet, based on the cartoonist believes then that is freedom of speech, regardless to wither I like or agree with what he or she says. But again I should say I have not seen any of them so I have no clue what they portray really. However, if it was insulting the religion for the sake of insulting a religion, i.e depicting the prophet as a pig, or so forth and so on then that is where sighting hatred against a specific religion, which as far as I know is not quite tolerated in Europe; when people started sighting hatred against the Jews, laws were drawn to stop such behaviour, freedom of speech can only go so far before people start getting hurt without government intervention. As the saying go, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” and as far as I see it, the same applies to freedom.

Personally, I would act with my money, since economy is the most effective measure of the current era, you don’t like something, don’t buy it and it would not hurt if you tell your friends about it and maybe they won’t buy it either.

Having said all this, and for all of you who are into protecting our freedoms why does it stop when it comes to Muslim women wearing a scarf, very baffling I would say, even though I am not into that and no one I know wears it, the fact that countries are legislating against women wearing it sounds very un-freedom like to me, but hey what do I know!

What is the point of belittling and insulting a religious icon dead 1500 years, knowing before hand that it would make so many people feel hurt and outraged! If you have a problem with an ideology and you think it is wrong you address what you think is wrong and rebuke it. Having freedoms and keeping them safe means you have responsibilities to how you enact them. Otherwise we will go back to the dark ages; where freedom meant the people in power enslave, kill or do whatever they feel like to the rest of us and the only thing the people would do is try not to perish!

Best Regards…

What we Danish are tired abouth is that Muslim dont have to be carefull abouth what they say, write or draw abouth Danish,
but Danish have to be real carefull else we get called rasists,
but muslims around the world and in denmark alså make cartoons ant even much more offensive ones,
but of course it is there right because they are such at misunderstandet, persuatet people.

Check this cartoones:
http://www.tomgrossmedia.com/ArabCartoons.htm

se the evil drawings muslims make.

Hey Kia, here's a bit of news, it's not just the Muslims who think Danes are a bag of arseholes, I think so too, and I'm true blue Australian!

You "do gooders" always have something to say about everything controversial and most of the time you don't have a clue what the issues are actually all about!

That doesn't mean I won't have a yarn with a Dane and maybe even a beer or two, but, quite honestly, if you idiots are going to cause crap with a bunch hyped up religious fanatics as though you were absent from the world for the past century, then hey, if ya make shit ya got to take the shit.

Lastly, a bit of advice, if you want a "bluey" with the Muslims that's your business, but NEVER start a "Bluey" with an Ozzy 'cos you'll lose!

In Islam, depicting is really a huge sin (especially if its GOD or Prophets being depicted)..i couldnt understand why did they have to do it, if not just to insult someone..lets say its there freedom of speech or what they may call it, but how could they be so "mean"..sorry for the word..if freedom of speech has to be that way, it should have not exsisted, coz in the first place, it coulndt do anything to help us.

Because they're NOT ISLAMIC! Depicting God or any prophet or other religious figure or icon in any way we like is part of having the freedom to worship anything we want or nothing at all. Most people are low key about religion anyway. Are ALL you people so stupid that you can't see this simple thing? Most people on this planet know nothing about your insane religion except from the insane things you do and say. We don't give a tinkers shit about Islam. We don't buy into all the bizarre rules and constant genuflecting and abuse of women and hatred of Jews and all the rest of the silly, pointless crap that you believe in. You don't think it's crap, I know, but most of us could care less. Most people don't know what Muslim belief is and don't care. We ignore the nasty stuff you write about us, and I heartily suggest you do the same in return. You don't see any Christians or Buddhists or whoever blowing themselves up, do you? No, just Muslims. The world sees your religion for exactly what it is, and our respect for it is rapidly declining. We WILL NOT cower to you bunch of screaming freaks. I do want to thank you and all the other Muslimites or whatever you call yourselves for all your blogs, though. They've been a real education into the sick minds of you people.

Regarding the Muhammad cartoons controversy; I think the GOOD MEDICINE religious cartoons are MUCH funnier! See what I mean; http://goodmedicinecartoons.tripod.com/id3.html
