Alcohol banned from Muslim cabs

While their kinfolk back home are murdering nuns and calling for the Pope to be killed,  Somali taxi drivers in Minnesota are also keen to do their bit for the global jihad.  They have taken it upon themselves to ban anyone carrying alcohol from their cabs.  Passengers arriving at Minneapolis-St.Paul airport carrying bottles of duty-free booze have been refused transport in Somali-driven cabs.

Until now,  the airport authorities have made the offending taxi drivers return to the back of the queue for refusing the fare.  That seems fair enough.  There is no law against carrying alcohol in America and so, if people want to impose their own rules,  they, rather than the passengers,  should be the ones who suffer the inconvenience.  But political correctness has always been the enemy of common sense and airport officials are now in discussion with the drivers and the Muslim American Society to find away round the problem.  The proposed solution is to have different coloured lights to let passengers know which drivers are not willing to take people carrying alcohol.  So rather than inconvenience the drivers who are attempting to impose their own rules on others,  the airport authorities have decided to inconvenience the passengers instead.  If you arrive at Minneapolis after a long flight, carrying some duty free or some booze bought on your trip,  your bleary jet-lagged eyes will have to scan the taxi rank and pick out the light of a cab that is prepared to take you.

It probably won't stop with alcohol though.  Last December, two gay men were kicked out of a cab in Minneapolis by a Muslim taxi driver.  Will gays be the next group to be banned from airport taxis?  Many Muslims don't like dogs so could they be banned from taxis too?  What about someone carrying pork or bacon?  Minneapolis might end up with a bewildering array of taxis all with different lights to say which passengers they will not take.

OK,  perhaps I'm being flippant but there is a serious point to this story. There have been Somali taxi drivers in Minnesota for years but they have never made an issue of carrying alcohol until now.  In a recent programme,  Minnesota Public Radio reported on the increasing influence of Islam among the local Somali community.  As with the many disputes involving Muslim communities in the UK,  this row is as much about territory as religion. 

Whether they are stopping a film from being made on Brick Lane,  demanding an end to outdoor drinking in Glasgow or stopping people with alcohol from getting an airport taxi,  Muslim groups are asserting their control over something that was once public and subject to the rules of the wider society.  Unfortunately, those charged with protecting the interests of the majority seem unwilling to do so.  They would rather inconvenience the rest of us than stand up to the demands of  increasingly aggressive minorities.

Here we have clear evidence that there are no moderates in islam. Each muslim is out propagate and enforce islam in his own little way, and the sum of the parts makes the whole.

If people have a problem with western civilisation perhaps they would appreciate living in a country where such prejudices are already the norm, and leave ordinary people to enjoy life unhindered by petty narrow minded sociopathic holier-than-thou pricks.

As to the Somalian muslim cabbies, they have to turn in a minimum amount in fares or they get fired and someone else gets a job driving that cab, which is owned by the company, not them. So more power to them, I say. Hell no, don't pick up gays or people with bottles or wearing crosses or obvious Jews or Nuns.... once all their asses are fired, that will be the end of this issue.

Surely cabs are licensed by the state or city council? Don't taxis in this country have to comply with somethng about not refusing a fare? Perhaps this also exists across the pond...?

If so, simply deny them licencing on the grounds of discrimination, then arrest them for illegal cabbing. It CAN be done, IF there is the political will to do it.

Sadly, it would seem there isn't.....

Oh. did you want a serious comment? The problem with this crap in America is our antipathy toward infringing on anyones personal practice of religion as long as they aren't breaking any laws. Refusing certain people a ride is illegal, yes, so the first effort is toward finding a way around it that allows religious freedom of expression.

Many people who get refused will call the cab company and complain, and the cabbie will end up getting fired, and pretty soon, if not already, some refused lawyer will sue the company and the cabbie. This sort of thing doesn't get by for long. People here are pretty zealous about not allowing their civil rights to get stepped on.

This is one of those situations that will resolve itself. A bunch of pissed off Americans are a force to be reckoned with in the marketplace.

No, the lights are a PROPOSAL. As of today no decision has been reached, and it's not up to the airport people anyway, that decision is up to the cab companies. They can fire the offending drivers, promote them, whatever.
If they go with the lights, a lot of people will stop using those cabs, alcohol or not. The Somalis will just be shooting themselves in the foot and so will the cab companies.
Stupidity isn't illegal and if the cab companies wish to indulge it, that's up to them. Cab companies are entitle to cave in to the demands of a few employees if they wish, and the customers are entitled to sue the crap out of the cab companies for violating their civil rights. They'll win, too, and maybe end up owning themselves a cab company.

I think we do things a litte differently here than you do in the UK. We get more aggressive in response to aggression. A recent example is that all those refugees from the New Orleans/Katrina hurricane disaster that went to Texas.... They decided to stay, keep the welfare they were given to help them get going again, and go out robbing and looting for a little extra income. The result of this is that the Texas news media, radio and so forth, has been advising local Texans to buy guns and get concealed weapon permits. In Texas you are allowed to kill anyone who breaks into your home or accosts you on the street with apparent intent to harm you. Texans don't screw around. Most other states have similar laws.

Can you do this in England?

For someone who claims to be pro-USA, Alison, you always seem to be the first to snipe at it.

There are times, reading all your comments, when I think that I care more for England than any of you do. You all complain like hell about the way your country is being taken over by muslims and destroyed by the Leftists and Multiculturalism and the EU, which it IS, but you do nothing to change anything. When I pointed out that alcoholism is a major problem in the UK, which it IS, and is getting steadily worse, which it IS, I got attacked for it and our lovely Alison, above, was so angry with me that after her attacks on my blog she deleted my site from her blogroll and continued to attack me on her blog. All because I commented on the drinking problem. Why did I comment on that? Because it's helping to ruin England and I care about England.

I'm not the cause of your anger, Alison. I'd wager that you fight and argue with virtually everyone. I know you drink a lot and that you get drunk a lot and that's why you didn't like my coming out against alcoholism. I'm not the one bending your elbow, girl. If you can't stop after a drink or two, then give a thought to AA. I drink, but I drink normally. One or two is good enough and not every day. Nothing wrong with having a few pints. It's knowing when to stop, and then stopping.

As to comments here, I don't worry if I offend anyone here. They never worried about offending me. They call it "taking the piss" (still the ugliest expression I've ever heard) of people. It's their form of humor. I just respond in kind and watch them go all ballistic.

Everything was fine until I commented on alcoholism. OOPS. Big mistake on a drinking blog, I have to admit. Boy, did they ever suddenly start attacking me. Wooeee. They said I had attacked their culture. I guess with a bunch of serious drinkers, that would be true.

You've taken some pretty nasty hits here yourself, you know. Boars have thick skins though. :)
