The Thatcher legacy

Laban Tall has a way of putting things succinctly.

The Thatcher years were when our modern culture - or lack of - entrenched itself, and while this was by no means all her fault, the toxic synergy between her determination to win the economic war and her total defeat in the cultural war produced pretty much the British social landscape we see today.

There are many books and articles about the Thatcher period. I have read quite a few of them but this sums it up better than most.

I shall store it up for future use.

Britain is shagged mate. And Brown is over the moon about it - a genuine smile on his face for the first time ever I think.

It's about time the English woke up and threw off the British yoke.

You are partially right; but how can a "defeat" "produce" something? surely a defeat merely allows what existed to continue or to flourish. Yet you make no mention of the iniquitous side of the 60's coin, its flip side being remembered for liberation, democracy, freedom, individualism etc. Yet, as something of a determinist, I find it hard to blame any individual for all that. So aren't you holding Mrs T responsible, because it is easier to blame someone, than it is to acknowledge that social forces in a free society (especially when promoted by the press) have a life of their own?
